ONE OF A KIND: MONOPRINTING ON A GEL PLATE
Saturday/Sunday, 10am - 4pm, March 9 & 10, 2024
Instructor: Jennifer Love
Fee: FULLY BOOKED
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate
Materials: Instructor will provide 6x6” gel plate at cost (or you can bring your own), plus some extra acrylic paints, printing inks, stamps, stencils etc. for use during the class. Students will need to bring a soft brayer, paper, acrylic paints and/or printing inks. Supply list will be provided upon registration.
Printing with a gel plate often feels like it is in the realm of magic. It is a recent addition to the artist’s toolkit and is gaining traction as an essentially painterly method that allows for multiple yet unique prints from the same plate, without a press. This workshop is suitable for those new to printing with a gel plate as well as experienced printmakers who wish to expand their skillset in an atmosphere of exploration and discovery.
We will start with the fundamentals - colour blending and gradations, creating textures, using masks and stencils, the use of different viscosity paints, building a composition and registering multiple layers. We will then move on to resist/transfer printing using a laser print of your own drawings or photographs, combining multiple techniques and layers in a single-pull print and more.

George Roberts developed Pronto Plates in 2001 as a new, low cost and nontoxic form of lithography. Far less complicated in process, these plastic plates can be run through a laser printer or drawn with permanent ink or toner and heated to create the “etch”. They are printed using a hand brayer, lithographic ink and wet sponge either by hand, baren or with an intaglio press. Julie will demonstrate its versatility and provide many tips and techniques for students to explore.
Julie McIntyre studied at the Banff Centre, Alberta in 1986 and received her BFA from Queen’s University with a major in printmaking in 1987. She has had solo shows in over 20 public galleries in Canada and participated in well over 40 juried exhibitions, including 24 international credits to date. Julie has taught workshops across Canada and is a long-time Artist in Residence with the Vancouver School Board.
